A group of female indie rockers will join forces on December 17th in Brooklyn, NY for a holiday concert to benefit our organization!  The Sirens of Brooklyn feature Marit Bergman, Courtney Kaiser, Cat Martino, Julia Frodahl, Rachelle Garniez, Lauren Balthrop, Liz Tormes, Katie Eastburn, Greta Gertler, Erin Flannery and Joy Askew. 

The group is putting together a special show featuring music that spans from traditional holiday songs sung in a unique way to classics like excerpts from Benjamin Brittain’s “Ceremony of Carols” to Yoko Ono.

New York City welfare recipients wait endlessly for their number to be called.  In the welfare office they let go, all rules are off, and these citizens really tell what fare they would pay to be well.  Written and performed by Nia Orms and directed by Oz Scott, Please Take a Number is a collection of characters standing at the crossroads of passivity and leadership.  Find out what it means to fight for survival and individuality when you are told to Please Take a Number.

In celebration of the United Nations’ International Day of Peace, Fork Films is releasing Pray the Devil Back to Hell, and is inviting organizations to participate in its grassroots screening. Pray the Devil Back to Hell tells the extraordinary story of a group of Liberian women who united to stop a civil war and to bring peace to their country, and is a tribute to women who advocate for peace worldwide. The film has already been shown by the Council on Foreign Relations, Human Rights Watch, and the World Economic Forum in Davos, and will continue its tour in small venues this September. As part of the celebration of the International Day of Peace, the United Nations hopes to spread the message of solidarity and to inspire those who fight for peace around the world.

As part of the 2009 V-Day College Campaign, the students of West Chester University are proud to present a benefit production of The Vagina Monologues to raise awareness and funds for local organizations working to end violence against women and girls. This year, proceeds from the show will be donated to Women for Women International, the Domestic Violence Center of Chester County, and The Crime Victims Center of Chester County.

The performances will be held on April 4th at 7 PM and April 5th at 2pm. All shows will be held at the Emilie K. Asplundh Concert Hall at West Chester University, located at the intersection of High Street and University Avenue.

 Tickets are $5 for West Chester University students and other students with valid ID. Tickets for the public are $10. Tickets may be purchased at the SSI Office in the bottom floor of Sykes Student Union, which is located on 110 W. Rosedale Avenue, West Chester, PA 19393. Soprano Jāma Jandroković and Jory Vinikour on harpsichord will perform during an evening of Baroque songs and arias entitled Baroque Heart: Music of Purcell & Handel. This event will be held at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. This performance will benefit Women for Women International.

Jāma Jandroković was recently heard at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall in a “revolutionary” performance in the contemporary stage work Five Lovers.  Ms. Jandroković will be joined by Jory Vinikour, “an authentic poet of the harpsichord” whose “immaculate virtuosity” has partnered opera stars Cecilia Bartoli, David Daniels and Anne-Sophie von Otter.

The Vagina Monologues movement, originally conceived by Eve Ensler, is a community-based project aimed at increasing awareness of violence against women, and bringing this violence to an end. Proceeds from the performance at Rockefeller University will support Women for Women International. This fund raising effort will provide the women we serve with the tools and resources they need to rebuild their own lives after conflict.

The event will be held Friday, February 13^th, at 7pm at Rockefeller University, Weiss Building on the 17^th floor. This event will feature performances by Samantha Deka, Asia Drag, Ann Fisher, Suzette Freedman, Hannah Kim, Jessica Krause, Nitika Nadgar, Nina Padukone, Pia Padukone, Cathy Sun, and Ilona Wall.
